23 Oct Self Care isn’t Selfish – The Mrs Project
I’ve never been one to slow down. Even at 37 weeks pregnant I decided to swap bedrooms and redecorate just in time before Ellis arrived. Chatting to other ladies on the ‘gram it’s something that lots of you struggle with to…
We make ourselves busy busy busy because well, firstly, that’s the way we like it but secondly, if we slow down or heaven forbid, SWITCH OFF, we feel like we should be doing something else, helping some else and end up feeling guilty for it.
Well I’ll let you in on a little secret beauties, SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH. Slowing down and taking time for you is not something you should feel guilty about. It’s perfectly OK to give yourself a break and better still not have to justify it.
The phrase you can’t pour from an empty cup is one I like to remind myself of from time to time. If you’re a do-er and a giver like me you’ve just gotta take time to recharge yourself to be able continue to give as much as you do.
Here are a 4 easy ways to make time for yourself and not feel guilty about it.
1. Make a Date
Set aside some weekly time. Surely we can make time in our schedule to give ourselves just 1 hour of solid ‘us’ time. A bath, a face mask, a quiet room with a book… Make it happen babes. I like Sundays. #selfcaresunday if you will. A bit of time each week FOR YOU! A bit of time to recharge and get ready for the week ahead.
2. Happy Post
Being a grown up can really suck and most of the time the stuff falling on our doormat is BILLS BILLS BILLS! Now I know none of you lovelies need any encouragement when it comes to a spot of internet shopping. Sometimes that knock on the door from our trusted DPD driver is just what we need for a little pick me up.
But how about a surprise parcel…
One thing I think is a great idea is a subscription box, there are so many out there dependant on your taste and style but one I’ve been introduced to is Mumsy Box – a monthly treat full of surprise goodies encouraging a little R&R. From skincare to sweet treats, these boxes are a joy to receive and a real prompt to take yourself off for an hour and give yourself a pamper!
3. Call in the Troops
They say it takes a village. Use them! If your family is around and willing why not give in and let them take over for a little bit. We headed out for our first date night last week and it was lovely. Sure, we missed Ellis a lot (!) but that time to ourselves was just what we needed.
4. If you’re Appy and you know it
There is an app for everything these days so let’s make that work to our advantage. Relaxation apps such as Headspace will often let you set reminders to switch off and relax and often takes up just 10 minutes of your day. If meditation isn’t for you, maybe start up some exercise? Hear me out! Apps like Couch to 5k are fab for getting into running, and as much as we hate to admit it, we never regret a workout, so let’s get those endorphins flowing. Podcasts are also great to zone out for 30 mins or so. And if you reeeeally can’t slow down then these are good for when you’re on the move.
Sounds easy right? Now we just need to make it happen. I order you to go run yourself a bath, pour some wine and lock the door. What do you do to unwind, are you guilty of not giving yourself a break? Let me know. Lots of Love! Mirlah xox
